Lots of Petals and Polka Dots
A few days ago (in this post), I mentioned that I'd share some photos (a mini-tutorial, I guess) on what I figured out for arranging the petals from Pick a Petal to get a flower-like shape. Here's what I came up with, in three easy steps, after a number of failed tries to get a fantastic flower.
After stamping and cutting out the petals (I used 5 petals for this flower that's partway on the cardfront), set one petal on the cardfront as shown. The petal is pretty much in the center of the paper when you look at it from top to bottom. I kind of curled the petal under so it didn't lie flat on the paper and looked more like a real flower petal--or as real as I can make a paper flower petal look . . .
Place the next two petals as shown. There is some overlap with the first petal. This won't matter since when you 're done, there will be something in the center covering the overlapping pieces.
Place the last two petals as shown. To finish the flower, add a flower "center" to hide where your pieces meet. This could be a punched out circle, one of the images from the stamp set, a button, or whatever else you might come up with. I've found that the best way to attach the petals to the paper is by using dimensionals. I've been attaching the pieces in the flower center with glue dots.
I like this placement of the flower because it leaves plenty of space for a sentiment either stamped directly on the cardfront or layered on with a punch.
And, of course, I have a card to share today, too. This is a sketch challenge from Heather at Ribbons and Ink. The sketch is originally from one of SU!'s Simply Sent kits. My proportions are slightly off from the original sketch, but I think that it worked out okay anyway. I also used her color challenge #8 (Barely Banana, Real Red, Tempting Turquoise, and Whisper White), in keeping with my recent Bold Brights theme.
I used the new jumbo wheel See You Around on the cardfront. I really like using the jumbo wheels with random-looking patterns. They don't have to be lined up so exactly to look good, which is a real plus for me. The flower from Polka Dots & Paisley is stamped in Tempting Turquoise. The flower outline is stamped over it in red and there's a little "bling" at the flower's center. The faux stitching really made a difference on this card. The white accents made the red panel "pop" just enough.
Materials Used:
From Stampin' Up!: Polka Dots & Paisley and Everyday Flexible Phrases stamp sets; See You Around jumbo wheel and handle; Real Red and Tempting Turquoise Classic inks; Real Red, Barely Banana, Tempting Turquoise, and Whisper White cardstockl turquoise grosgrain; sponge; mat pack and paper piercing tool; white gel pen; glue dot; dimensionals
Other: yellow button (Walmart); self-adhesive rhinestone (Joann)

Great job using the sketch! I love this color combo, it is just so bright and cheery. I really like the faux stitching, it helps the flower just pop. Thanks for playing along :)
ReplyDeleteI never thought to turn the petals points out...I see that in your purple polka-a-dot card. TFS!
