Blogger Challenge: Week 48

This week's challenge was to use red, white, and blue. I went with a nautical theme for the challenge, using SU!'s Boatloads of Love stamp set for my card. I did a pop-out card, following the directions on Lauren's blog. Since I saw her card and directions last weekend, I've been thinking about how I could do this and I finally came up with my idea last night. That my idea fit this week's challenge was a bonus!

I stamped the boat image first, then scored from the edges of the card to the edges of the image. I trimmed the portions of the boat that were above my score line with a craft blade, then folded them out to create the pop-out. The boat is colored with Copic markers and some gold gel pen for the anchor, too. I stamped the heart image on a scrap of red cardstock, covered with Fruit Punch Stickles and attached that to the back of the boat.

The water was a challenge for me. Initially, I did a watercolor wash using Brocade Blue and an aquapainter. I wasn't wild about how that turned out, so I added some Twinkling H20's to the mix. That made my paper really wavy and soft and not great for supporting the pop-out. So, I turned to my Cuttlebug. I embossed a piece of Brocade Blue cardstock using the D'Vine Swirls folder, stamped the boat image on the paper, and trimmed around it to fit it on my card.

Instead of leaving the back portion of the card white, I lined it with a piece of Bashful Blue cardstock to be like the sky. I added some puffs of smoke on dimensionals and the sentiment on a word window punch. This was a fun card to make and really not difficult at all once I sat down to try it.
