Layering it On

Here are my cards for the last two April Viva la Verve sketches. Both of these sketches have a lot of bits and pieces and layers and that was a real challenge to me.

I’m using this cheery card for week 4’s sketch as my entry for Verve’s current Diva Dare, too. I made sure to incorporate bright colors and a butterfly die cut to fit the challenge!

The yellow striped and orange starburst patterned papers are from an Echo Park paper pad. They seemed to fit the definition of “bright!” I layered each patterned piece on an orange mat before attaching them to a yellow panel. Once they were in place, I added an oval for the sentiment. Instead of stamping the sentiment directly on the oval, I attached a notch-ended strip to the oval and stamped the “you make me smile” sentiment from the Love Notes set on that in orange ink.

I die cut the butterfly shape from orange cardstock and again from vellum. I layered the vellum butterfly on top of the cardstock one, then adhered the butterfly at the end of the sentiment strip. A row of tiny pearls along the center of the butterfly hides the adhesive I used on the vellum.

Materials Used:
Love Notes stamp set (Verve Stamps); Vivid Butterscotch ink (Clearsnap); Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight, and Whisper White cardstock (Stampin’ Up!); white vellum (The Paper Company); Scoot 6x6 paper pad (Echo Park); Fishtail Flag Layers Stax die (My Favorite Things); oval dies (Spellbinders); silver brads, small self-adhesive pearls (Michaels)

This one uses a cooler color scheme, but still has lots of layers going on. I thought the blues and greens were a good match for the “missing you” sentiment from the Always on my Mind set.

I used the sentiment with a pair of patterned papers from a My Mind’s Eye paper pad. I picked a smaller scale pattern for the background strips and used a bolder one for the panel in front. The panel in front has an avocado green ribbon strip across the top, edged with a few little pieces from Verve’s Pennant Trim die. The sentiment is at the bottom of the panel, layered over a large blue-green circle and accented with a green notch-ended panel.

Materials Used:
Always on my Mind stamp set, Pennant Trim die (Verve Stamps); Simply Chartreuse ink, Ocean Tides and Ripe Avocado cardstock, Ripe Avocado satin ribbon (Papertrey Ink); Indie Chic “Citron” 6x6 paper pad (My Mind’s Eye); circle dies (Spellbinders); Fishtail Flag Layers Stax die (My Favorite Things); copper brads (Michaels)
