Last week marked the end of my second summer grad school class, so I was able to find some time to play along with this summer's Camp Create at My Favorite Things. Here are the projects I created for each of the challenges.
The Day 1 challenge was to create a shaker card. I used a large word die for this super simple shaker that gets the message across even with its simplicity. The word "hugs" was cut from a pale purple panel to start the shaker element. I backed the panel with clear acetate, then adhered a white cardstock panel bordered with foam tape and filled with a mix of sequins to the back of the panel to fill the shaker component. More foam tape was used to adhere the pale purple panel to a darker purple card base. The "sending you strength" sentiment from the Essential Sentiments stamp set was stamped in white pigment ink on a super narrow fishtail flag strip. I embossed the text in white so it would pop against the dark background, then adhered to strip over part of the die cut word.
Materials Used:
Essential Sentiments stamp set, Big Hugs. Blueprints 21, and Fishtail Flag STAX dies (My Favorite Things); Memento Luxe Wedding Dress ink (Tsukineko/IMAGINE Crafts); Very Violet cardstock,Snow embossing powder (Recollections); sequins; clear acetate; foam tape
The Day 2 challenge was watercoloring. I own that I am a lousy watercolor-er. No matter how much I practice or what tools I use, it just doesn't work for me. But, I took the challenge and I tried...As usual I'm not thrilled with the results, but I'm sharing them anyway.
I used MFT dye inks to watercolor the trio of flowers from the Flowers in Bloom stamp set. The images were stamped on watercolor paper in waterproof black ink, then I used a wet brush to pick up ink that I had pressed on to a clear block. After letting the flowers dry, I used the matching die to cut out the colored image. The die cut piece was adhered to a white panel with a pale blue watercolor wash over a portion of it for contrast, using foam tape for dimension. For the sentiment, I stamped the "thanks for all you do" sentiment from MFT's Bitty Thanks and Gratitude stamp set on a narrow golden yellow cardstock strip and used more foam tape to position the strip at the bottom of the panel over the flower stems. The finished panel was adhered to a golden yellow card base matching the sentiment strip.
Materials Used:
Flowers in Bloom and Bitty Thanks and Gratitude stamp sets, Ripe Raspberry, Orange Fizz, Daffodil, and Gumdrop Green inks, Flowers in Bloom dies (My Favorite Things); Memento Versafine Clair Nocturne ink (Tsukineko/IMAGINE Crafts); Tumbled Glass distress ink (Ranger); Harvest Gold cardstock (Papertrey Ink); foam tape
The Day 3 challenge was emboss resist. I went with florals again for this card. This time I stamped one of the solid images from the Floral Silhouettes stamp set repeatedly in white pigment ink on the right side of a light green panel, varying the placement of the image each time for interest. The stamped images were heat embossed with white embossing powder. For the emboss resist component, I inked over the embossed area with olive green distress ink. Once I was finished applying the ink, I used a paper towel to rub the green ink off of the embossing powder, which really highlighted the contrast from the resist. For the sentiment, I stamped the "thanks for your support" sentiment from the Bitty Thanks and Gratitude set in white pigment ink on a narrow darker green cardstock strip and heat embossed the text. The strip was placed over the bottom of the flower stems using foam tape for dimension. The finished panel was adhered a darker green panel matching the sentiment strip.
Materials Used:
Flower Silhouettes and Bitty Thanks and Gratitude stamp sets (My Favorite Things); Memento Luxe Wedding Dress ink (Tsukineko/IMAGINE Crafts); Crushed Olive distress ink (Ranger); Spring Moss and Ripe Avocado cardstock (Papertrey Ink); Snow embossing powder (Recollections); foam tape
The Day 4 challenge was backgrounds. I used stencils and ink blending for a star-studded background perfect for one of the images from the Friendship Rocks stamp set. I used watermark ink and the Card-Sized Star Confetti stencil to cover a panel with stars. The stars were embossed with silver embossing powder for sparkle and shine, then I blended a trio of distress oxides over the panel.
I colored up one of the set's singers and the stage using Copic markers, then cut the images out with my Scan 'n Cut machine. The images were placed in the lower right corner of the background panel usingfoam tape for dimension. I stamped the set's "today, you're in the spotlight" sentiment on a purple fishtail flag strip in silver ink, then heat embossed the text in silver. The strip was adhered to the top left side of the panel, then I adhered the panel to a matching purple card base to tie all of the elements together.
Materials Used:
Friendship Rocks stamp set, Fishtail Flag STAX dies, Card-Sized Star Confetti stencils (My Favorite Things); Memento Tuxedo Black, Versamark, and Encore Silver inks (Tsukineko/IMAGINE Crafts); Wilted Violet, Seedless Preserves, and Worn Lipstick distress oxides (Ranger); markers (Copic); Very Violet cardstock (Recollections); Sterling Silver embossing powder (Stampin' Up!); foam tape
The Day 5 challenge was to make die cuts the focal point of your card. I paired the Mondo Cheers die with the classic Layered Champagne Glass die for this celebratory design. The glass was cut from white vellum for a frosted glass look. The "liquid" was cut from gold foil cardstock. Both pieces were adhered to the right side of a white cardstock panel. For the sentiment, I cut the Mondo Cheers die from more gold foil cardstock and some white scrap cardstock. After layering the pieces for dimension, Iplaced them on the panel, positioning the word strategically to allow me to use some adhesive on the narrow stem of the champagne glass die cut. The "let's celebrate you" sentiment from the More Essential Sentiments set was stamped on a black fishtail flag strip in gold ink, then heat embossed in gold. I placed it directly beneath the die cut "cheers" to finish the sentiment. A trio of silver sequins scattered around the glass added a final sparkly touch. The finished panel was adhered to a contrasting black card base.
Materials Used:
More Essential Sentiments stamp set, Mondo Cheers, Layered Champagne Glass, and Fishtail Flag STAX dies (My Favorite Things); Delicata Golden Glitz ink (Tsukineko/IMAGINE Crafts); Basic Black cardstock (Stampin' Up!); Gold Foil cardstock, white vellum (Recollections); Gold Zing! embossing powder (American Crafts); silver sequins
